EVELYN BENCICOVA - IMMERSION, Stiftung Reinbeckhallen
On the occasion of the European Month of Photography (EMOP 2025), Evelyn Bencicova’s institutional exhibition Immersion at Reinbeckhallen explores the tension between individual identity and collective systems.
Growing up in a high-rise building block, Evelyn Bencicova (b. 1992 in Bratislava, Slovakia) would spend time observing the homes and activities of her neighbours through a pair of binoculars. What these binoculars failed to disclose, the artist imagined, developing narratives about her neighbours’ lives that fused reality and fiction and a creative method that would later serve her when working on her photographic series, audio-visual pieces, and VR projects.

A graduate of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Bencicova works serially and often with other artists. For the past decade, she has used photography and new media to explore a variety of topics, such as traces of the past in former socialist countries, the differences between humans and machines, and the increasing inability to distinguish between reality and its representation. Made between 2016 and 2025, the works in this exhibition address these and other themes and invite visitors to delve into Bencicova’s thought-provoking worlds.

Curated by Dr. Candice M. Hamelin and supported by JAEGER ART, Immersion will be accompanied by a series of performances and an artist talk at the Reinbeckhallen.
