Told You brings together a focused selection of artworks from over three decades – many of which have not been shown publicly since the 1990s.
Julio Rondo has developed his own visual language that he has stayed true to over the years, while continuing to refine it - a language that gives his work a strong sense of identity and recognizability. He paints exclusively on the reverse side of glass, which gives his works a special depth and glow. The paintings are created layer by layer, carefully composed, but still open to chance and intuition.
Rondo takes inspiration from architecture, music, personal memories, and everyday impressions. His titles – often taken from song lyrics – create poetic and emotional connections that invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences.
Dr. Matthias Harder - art historian and Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation - writes in the publication accompanying the exhibition: "Rondo belongs to that rare coterie of storytellers, channeling memory through abstract painting... layer by layer, his paintings become palimpsests of memory that no longer seem purely subjective.“
