Some exhibitions find their perfect setting in the places that host them.
These days, the Falsterbo Photo Art Museum presents Dancing with a Stranger, Kristian Schuller’s first major museum exhibition in Sweden.
Nestled among the dunes and pine forests of Falsterbo, just a short walk from one of Scandinavia’s most beautiful beaches, the museum is shaped by the sea, the unique Nordic light and the vast openness of the surrounding landscape. Together they create an atmosphere that is difficult to describe and draws visitors from across Europe.
Few artists could be better suited to this extraordinary setting than Kristian Schuller, who for many years has created photographic worlds that move effortlessly between fashion, staging, dream and reality.
Having studied under F. C. Gundlach and Vivienne Westwood, Schuller developed a visual language that defies simple categorisation. His photographs tell stories filled with fantasy, beauty and poetry, creating images that feel both familiar and entirely surreal.
For Dancing with a Stranger, works from different periods and bodies of work have been brought together, including iconic fashion photographs, international portraits and selected pieces from Schuller’s personal artistic practice. The exhibition is complemented by new light works as well as an extraordinary selection of costumes by Peggy Schuller, presented publicly for the very first time.
These designs offer a rare glimpse behind the scenes and reveal the creative dialogue between Kristian and Peggy Schuller. They demonstrate how closely many of the photographs are connected to the costumes and visual concepts developed by Peggy, and how this collaboration has shaped the distinctive visual worlds for which Kristian Schuller has become internationally recognised.
Developed over many months in close collaboration between Kristian and Peggy Schuller, Christina and Claes Lindquist and Jaeger Art, the exhibition was conceived specifically for the architecture of the museum and the unique atmosphere of Falsterbo.
