The Phair 2023: Art Fair

On the occasion of The Phair, JAEGER ART presents three different positions in the genre of contemporary portrait photography, from established and internationally well-known artists as well as new and very visionary and progressive approaches.
Anton Corbijn is well-known and for his iconic portraits of artists, musicians, actors or painters. We present a recent work of Depeche Mode, which is also the main image for their current world tour „Memento Mori". Anton Corbijn cemented Depeche Mode's cutting-edge reputation as the biggest cult band. He is considered the visual heart of Depeche Mode or U2 or other world famous musicians being responsible for record covers, stage settings or music videos. Thus we will furthermore exhibit a portrait of Leonard Cohen from 1992. As Anton Corbijn is not only a renowned photographer but also a well respected film director we will exhibit a photograph of Philip Seymour Hoffman from 2011, which Corbijn took of him during the shooting of the Hollywood movie "A Most Wanted Man". The photographs of Depeche Mode and Leonard Cohen will be presented to the art world for the first time on the occasion of The Phair.

Bastiaan Woudt, born in 1987, is celebrated for his masterful portraiture in which he gives his subjects a delicate, sculptural look. Bastiaan's work is minimalistic and inspired by the great masters of 50s, 60s and 70s photography like e.g. Man Ray, Irving Penn or Richard Avedon. He honors this aera while exploring how modern methods can elevate the style of today. With his charcoal tones and elegant compositions, his photography feels like stepping into a modern painting. We are proud to be able to show three works that have been created only recently and to present them for the first time to the public in Turin.

Evelyn Bencicova, born in Bratislava in 1992, is a visual storyteller who has not only committed herself to the genre of photography, but also works with new media such as video and virtual reality. We present 4 works from her award-winning series Artificial Tears. In this series, the protagonist adopts a classic female appearance based on stereotype and perfection. The idea for this theme came as a reaction to the question: "What is the difference between man and machine?" Particularly fascinating are her often theatrical stage designs, inspired in certain ways by surrealist film directors and the general absurdity and beauty of life. This artist takes the viewer into a visual world in which the boundaries between memory, fantasy and imagination become blurred. Evelyn describes her narrative scenarios as "fictions based on truths."
