We are delighted to announce Kristian Schuller’s first museum exhibition in Sweden.
Opening on June 20, 2026, at Falsterbo Photo Art Museum, the exhibition presents a major selection of works by one of Germany’s most distinctive contemporary photographers. Situated amidst the spectacular dunes of Falsterbo, just a short distance from Malmö and Copenhagen, the museum provides an extraordinary setting for Schuller’s poetic and visually captivating imagery.
Particularly striking in this context are Schuller’s iconic photographs created along coastlines around the world, where monumental dresses unfold like sails or parachutes within expansive landscapes. These images seem almost destined for Falsterbo, where the dunes, sea, wind and light create a natural extension of the worlds depicted in his photographs. Blending fashion, theatre, fantasy and storytelling, Schuller’s work transcends the boundaries of traditional fashion photography.
Alongside these works, the exhibition features a selection of Schuller’s striking portraits, whose visual power lies in their unique blend of fashion, theatre and psychological presence. Instantly recognizable yet deeply personal, these images reveal Schuller’s remarkable ability to transform each subject into part of a larger narrative. Among them are portraits of figures such as Léa Seydoux, Nadja Auermann, Cate Blanchett and Penélope Cruz.
The exhibition also includes works from Schuller’s Transylvania series, inspired by the region where he spent part of his childhood. Depicting landscapes, places and people that shaped his early understanding of home, these images offer a more intimate and personal perspective, creating a compelling counterpoint to the artist’s internationally celebrated fashion and portrait photography.
A special highlight of the exhibition is the presentation of Schuller’s light installations alongside a selection of original dresses created by Peggy Schuller. For the first time, these garments become an integral part of a museum exhibition, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the world behind the photographs.
For many years, Kristian and Peggy Schuller have developed their visual universe together. Peggy’s extraordinary costumes and dresses are far more than fashion pieces. They are essential elements of the characters, stories and dreamlike atmospheres that define Schuller’s imagery. By bringing these works into the exhibition space, visitors encounter the photographs, installations and garments as interconnected parts of one artistic vision.
Together, they transform the exhibition into an immersive journey through imagination, storytelling and craftsmanship that extends far beyond the framed image.
Born in Romania and raised in Germany, Kristian Schuller studied under legendary photographer F.C. Gundlach and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. Over the past decades, he has developed a unique visual language that is instantly recognizable. Created in close collaboration with his wife Peggy Schuller, his photographs are characterized by a playful use of colour, light and movement, inviting viewers into worlds shaped as much by imagination as by reality.
As Schuller himself explains:
"I would rather dream my way into the unknown than have everything presented to me in bright light. The silhouette of a woman is enough to let an entire film play out in my imagination."
